COVID-19 virus

I’d drafted a final blog relating to my FreeNAS adventures over the last few months, but it all seems a little pointless at the minute given whats going on around the world with COVID-19. Who could have even begun to imagine we’d be where we are now when I ordered the components back here.

To be honest, I’m one of the lucky ones who’ll be inconvenienced by this, but it’s unlikely to have any real life-changing implications. My partner and I have been working from home for the last week, and my daughter will be off school for several weeks, but we’re pretty financially stable and will continue to have an income greater than our outgoings. We’ve had to cancel our Easter holiday to Philadelphia and Mexico, but expect to get most of the money back either from the companies we booked with or through our travel insurance.

Some people lives are already been completely turned upside down, and for many things will get much worse before they get better. Thousands of people around the world have already lost family and friends, and the predictions all suggest this is only the tip of the iceberg. It feels so surreal and almost like a bad dream, but there’s no waking up from this one.

All that said, finding free time over the next few months is going to be a challenge, trying to juggle what remains of my contract, a virtual handover to my permanent replacement, and my daughters home-schooling. I should also be on the lookout for my next contract role, although I suspect that might be a little more difficult now, and something I’ll be less focused on given the other priorities.

So this might be the last blog for a few months while this plays out and everyone starts to adapt until the virus is under control and life can start getting back to normal. In the meantime look out for your friends and neighbours, but most importantly stay safe and look after you and your family.

I’ll leave you with one of the best videos I’ve seen on the virus and one that everyone should get around to watching.
