_builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.15&#8243;]<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-22526 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/home.apeconsulting.co.uk\/adrian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/09\/microsoft-virtual-machine-monitoring-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>When I upgraded my FreeNAS server from 9.10.1-U4 I lost my VirtualBox VMs.\u00a0 I\u2019d managed to recreate the ubuntu and FreeNAS ones using iohyve\/bhyve, but hadn\u2019t managed to replace the Windows VM on FreeNAS, until today!<\/p>\r\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p>This is something I\u2019ve been wanting to do for some time, but from the various threads I\u2019d skimmed over,\u00a0I thought for some reason that it was going to be too difficult.\u00a0 Had I know what I\u2019m going to tell you below, I\u2019d have done this much sooner.<\/p>\r\n<p>The issue I\u2019d always faced when trying to create a Windows VM in FreeNAS, either from the CLI using\u00a0iohyvecommand or more recently from the GUI since upgrading to 11.1-U4, was the UEFI Shell screen.<\/p>\r[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/home.apeconsulting.co.uk\/adrian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/09\/win_vm_1.jpg&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.15&#8243;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.15&#8243;]<p>Little did I know that typing \u2018exit\u2019 and then hitting Enter brings up another screen.<\/p>\r[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/home.apeconsulting.co.uk\/adrian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/09\/win_vm_2.jpg&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.15&#8243;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.15&#8243;]<p>Pressing Enter on this screen\u00a0brings up the screen I was expecting to see, and pressing any key starts the Windows boot process.<\/p>\r[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/home.apeconsulting.co.uk\/adrian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/09\/win_vm_3.jpg&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.15&#8243;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.15&#8243;]<p>Yes, really that simple!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I used my Windows 10 VM on VirtualBox for running a Glassfish\/Java application on a Microsoft SQL database that I\u2019d helped to develop and support when working for BT.<\/p>\r\n<p>I\u2019d been speaking with someone about it recently and wanted to show them, but it wasn\u2019t very easy to do on my MacBook, as I needed another VM.\u00a0 The Corporate Procurement Analysis System, or CPAS for short, has been written to make use a quite a large amount of RAM (back in 2009) and struggled with anything less than 8GB.<\/p>\r\n<p>Given my MacBook only has 8GB, which would be needed to run macOS and then virtualise Windows, before even getting to CPAS it was never a very good platform for demonstrating.\u00a0 Creating a VM on my FreeNAS server allows me to provision plenty of RAM and CPU, and I can demonstrate much more like it would ultimately be deployed, in a client-server model.<\/p>\r\n<p>Anyway, it took a couple of failed attempts before I finally got everything running\u00a0as I\u2019d\u00a0like.<\/p>\r\n<p>Take 1 I\u2019d tried to use Windows 10, and remember having problems with some of the older java packages so eventually gave up.<\/p>\r\n<p>Take 2 I thought I\u2019d use Windows Server 2012 R2 (which is what we\u2019d used at a couple of sites for BT)\u00a0 and I got everything installed and working without too many problems, although the VM itself was very unstable and crashed far to frequently to be used even for testing.<\/p>\r\n<p>For Take 3 I used Windows Server 2016 and everything worked perfectly!<\/p>\r\n<p>The only bit I still haven\u2019t worked out it how to access externally through my NGINX Reverse Proxy, as I\u2019m just getting a 403 error with the various things I\u2019ve tried.\u00a0 For the time being, I\u2019ve just opened and forwarded a random port on my router straight to the jail IP.<\/p>\r\n<p>Anyway, if you stumble upon this struggling how to create a Windows VM in FreeNAS, I hope the simple steps above help you on your way\u2026<\/p>\r[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I upgraded my FreeNAS server from 9.10.1-U4 I lost my VirtualBox VMs.\u00a0 I\u2019d managed to recreate the ubuntu and FreeNAS ones using iohyve\/bhyve, but hadn\u2019t managed to replace the Windows VM on FreeNAS, until today!
