{"id":21670,"date":"2018-05-23T09:00:23","date_gmt":"2018-05-23T08:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/home.apeconsulting.co.uk\/adrian\/?p=21670"},"modified":"2019-05-21T10:36:21","modified_gmt":"2019-05-21T09:36:21","slug":"painless-freenas-upgrade-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/home.apeconsulting.co.uk\/adrian\/painless-freenas-upgrade-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Painless FreeNAS Upgrade (part 2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So after a painless FreeNAS upgrade, it was time to make use of the new jail management system, iocage, and rebuild my warden jails&#8230;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Before we start, I was never expecting this to be a painless process, and fully expected to have issues with at least some of the jails I use. \u00a0The fact I&#8217;ve managed to get almost everything migrated and running from iocage jails within 3-4 days of upgrading FreeNAS has surprised me though, made even sweeter by the fact it should be the last time I&#8217;ll need to do it.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing worth taking into account is the current state of iocage. \u00a0Here&#8217;s what it says in the current <a href=\"https:\/\/iocage.readthedocs.io\/en\/stable\/basic-use.html\">0.9.9.2 documentation<\/a> regarding VIMAGE\/VNET:<\/p>\n<pre><em>VNET is considered experimental. Unexpected system crashes can occur. <\/em><\/pre>\n<pre><em>More details about issues with VNET are available in the <a class=\"reference internal\" href=\"https:\/\/iocage.readthedocs.io\/en\/stable\/known-issues.html#known-issues\"><span class=\"std std-ref\">Known Issues<\/span><\/a> <\/em><em>section of \nthis documentation.<\/em><\/pre>\n<p>It&#8217;s fair to say iocage is relatively new, and still isn&#8217;t fully baked into the FreeNAS UI. \u00a0Whilst there is a Jails section in the new Beta UI which displays all of the iocage jails, the functionality for creating and managing them isn&#8217;t recommended, and all comments in the FreeNAS forums point to only using iocage through the Command Line Interface (CLI) until the 11.2 release.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t necessarily a bad thing, as knowing some of the commands and understanding a little more about how it works is always useful, even if in the long run it might not be used that much.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not going to try and document every command I entered as it would take all day, and you&#8217;d probably die of boredom before you got anywhere near the end! \u00a0The documentation is pretty good, and a great place to start, but here are a few commands that you&#8217;ll use over and over again if you do anything similar:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>iocage list shows a list of your jails and their status and looks like this:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21677 \" title=\"freenas upgrade socage list screenshot\" src=\"https:\/\/home.apeconsulting.co.uk\/adrian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/05\/iocage-list-1024x747.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"683\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/home.apeconsulting.co.uk\/adrian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/05\/iocage-list-1024x747.png 1024w, https:\/\/home.apeconsulting.co.uk\/adrian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/05\/iocage-list-300x219.png 300w, https:\/\/home.apeconsulting.co.uk\/adrian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/05\/iocage-list-768x560.png 768w, https:\/\/home.apeconsulting.co.uk\/adrian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/05\/iocage-list-610x445.png 610w, https:\/\/home.apeconsulting.co.uk\/adrian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/05\/iocage-list-1080x788.png 1080w, https:\/\/home.apeconsulting.co.uk\/adrian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/05\/iocage-list.png 1109w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>iocage restart &lt;jail-name&gt; restarts the jail<\/li>\n<li>iocage get all &lt;jail-name&gt; shows all the options and properties that can be configured with iocage set &lt;option&gt;=&lt;property&gt; &lt;jail-name&gt;<\/li>\n<li>iocage fetch -r 11.1-RELEASE downloads the versions of FreeBSD to use in the jails (I only downloaded the latest)<\/li>\n<li>iocage create -n &lt;jail-name&gt; -r 11.1-RELEASE ip4_add=&#8221;&lt;adapter|IP\/MASK&gt;&#8221; defaultrouter=&#8221;IP&#8221; vnet=&#8221;on&#8221; allow_raw_sockets=&#8221;1&#8243; boot=&#8221;on&#8221; is the default command I used for creating my jails<\/li>\n<li>iocage fstab -a &lt;jail-name&gt; &#8220;\/mnt\/tank\/dataset \/mnt\/path-in-jail nullfs \u00a0rw \u00a00 \u00a00&#8221; allows you to mount storage on the FreeNAS pool inside the jail (this is really useful, as it can&#8217;t be done in the UI at the minute, and almost all my jails mount to somewhere on my zpool. iocage fstab -l &lt;jail-name&gt; displays a list of the fstab mounts and iocage fstab -r &lt;jail-name&gt; &lt;index&gt; removes the index line<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And that&#8217;s pretty much all I used for the 7 iocage jails I created. \u00a0Once it&#8217;s running, you enter the jail with iocage console &lt;jail-name&gt; (or jexec &lt;JID&gt; tcsh just like you did with a Warden jail) and from that point, it&#8217;s not really any different. \u00a0The command jls still works and actually displays both iocage and warden jails running on the system!<\/p>\n<p>I was going to describe my experiences creating the iocage jails in this blog, but it&#8217;s already dragging on so I&#8217;ll do that in another one to follow&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So after a painless FreeNAS upgrade, it was time to make use of the new jail management system, iocage, and rebuild my warden jails&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[19,2,9,14],"tags":[21],"class_list":["post-21670","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-freenas","category-it","category-server","category-wordpress","tag-spellchecked"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Painless FreeNAS Upgrade (part 2) - Adrian&#039;s Blog<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"So after a painless FreeNAS upgrade, it was time to make use of the new jail management system, iocage, and rebuild my warden jails.
